Well, I could probably buy several countries...or at least afford a couple of nights here. But really, 8 Trillion is the total cost of all the buyouts and other money the the US goverment has apparently fabricated out of thin air. Where has it all gone? Don't really know...don't really care because I'm never going to get any of it. Not to be bitter betty, but all these companies have totally screwed up and it's like they get a free pass. So, let's do some math: 8 Trillion or 8,000,000,000,000. Divide that by the US labor force (as of 2007 US Fact Finder) which is 152,000,000. If you cancel out the zeros...you have 8 Million or 8,000,000 divided by 152. That averages out to $52,631/person. In 2007, the median household income was $50,007. Think about what that money could do for families that are struggling right now with credit card debt and/or having their houses foreclosed.
I realize it's not the simple. I realize you can't just give people money and expect them to do the right thing with it. If that were the case, we probably wouldn't be in this crisis in the first place. Regardless, it bothers me that Trillions of dollars are getting tossed around and so far, none of it has made it to the actual US citizen who is struggling. That, however, is why I am sitting at a computer complaining about it and not in congress laughing all the way to the bank (i mean trying to fix the problem).
